GIG LIST For my upcoming gigs, check out my facebook page .
I play Bass in various bands, Fretted 4 or 5 string, Fretless 4 or 5 string and Upright Double Bass both acoustic and Electric. Some of the people that see me play have asked where I am playing and who I am playing with so they can come to see me play. So I set this page up as a gig guide. You can also follow me on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/alandawsonbass/
I always had an interest in music from a very early age listening to both my grandparents and parents record collection over and over.
At an early age in the UK I was a regular listener to radio Caroline. I became a big Beatles fan before discovering the British blues in the early 1970’s, acts like John Mayall, and Robin Trower, my music tastes included bands like ELP (a very big influence), Yes, Uriah Heap, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.
Although a was a bit of a late starter (16 years old) to actually playing most of my friends played music through high school and I was always there at jam sessions talking about arrangements and musical tastes. Eventually a friend showed me how to play a song on bass guitar and the seed was sown, joining my first working band in 1975. My major bass playing influences coming from, Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, Greg Lake, Geezer Butler and Geddy Lee.
My music interests are wide and varied, I listen to everything: Classical, Folk, World, Blues, Country, Jazz, Pop, Rock Heavy Rock and Metal, I am a fan of Trip Hop and electronic music, Portishead, Massive Attack, Lamb, and music by producers Above & Beyond.
I also work as a Sound Engineer and started Mixing live sound in the early 1970’s, I run a large PA system and lighting for a number of years since the late 1980’s and I still occasionally mix live sound for events and still look after the PA at smaller gigs.
I operate a recording studio, Witzend Studios, which started up in a house in 1983 and grew to what it is today. I have had an interest in recording since high school where I would take a portable recorder to gigs and record local bands.
You will also hear me on Radio; I was a founding member of Radio Fremantle 107.9fm (formally 100.1fm) and have presented a weekly show of local WA music since the station went to air in 1987.
Past bands played in include:
And several other bands and recording projects as a session player.
